Donor Network of Arizona (DNA) is the state's only nonprofit organ procurement organization, serving all of Arizona.     TISSUE & OCULAR RECOVERY & PLACEMENT SERVICES: THE ORGANIZATION ALSO FACILITATED THE DONATION AND RECOVERY OF VARIOUS TISSUES FOR TRANSPLANT PURPOSES.IN 2020, DESPITE CHALLENGES PRESENTED BY COVID-19 WHICH RESULTED IN THE DEFERRAL OF DONORS AS WELL AS A DECREASE IN ELECTIVE SURGERIES PERFORMED, 1,643 PEOPLE DONATED BONE, CARDIOVASCULAR, OR SKIN TISSUE. OF THESE, 983 PEOPLE DONATED BONE FOR ORTHOPEDIC PURPOSES. AS THE NUMBER ONE RECOVERY AGENCY FOR OUR HEART VALVE RECOVERY PARTNER, WE FACILITATED THE DONATION OF A RECORD-SETTING 387 HEART VALVES. THIS WAS A 33% INCREASE FROM THE PREVIOUS RECORD-SETTING YEAR. HEART VALVES ARE MOST FREQUENTLY TRANSPLANTED IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS. THERE WERE ALSO 550 SAPHENOUS VEINS DONATED IN 2020. THE GENEROSITY OF 1,512 PEOPLE RESULTED IN DONATED SKIN FOR BURN VICTIMS AND RESTORATIVE PROCEDURES. THE 1,643 DONORS ALSO DONATED OTHER CARDIOVASCULAR AND ORTHOPEDIC TISSUES.IN ADDITION, 580 PEOPLE DONATED CORNEAS THAT RESULTED IN 673 CORNEAL TRANSPLANTS, OF WHICH 29 WERE PROVIDED GRATIS FOR THOSE WHO COULD NOT AFFORD A TRANSPLANT OTHERWISE. THESE DONORS ALSO DONATED CORNEAS FOR RESEARCH AND SCLERA FOR TRANSPLANTATION PURPOSES. BECAUSE OF COVID-19 CONCERNS AND PPE SHORTAGES, A BAN ON ELECTIVE SURGERIES WAS IN PLACE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS DURING 2020. THIS INCLUDED THE MAJORITY OF CORNEAL TRANSPLANTS, RESULTING IN LOWER NUMBERS OF CORNEAS TRANSPLANTED THAN IN PREVIOUS YEARS.

    HOSPITAL DONOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: THE HOSPITAL DONOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAXIMIZING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF DONORS RECOVERED FOR TRANSPLANT IN ARIZONA THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF INDIVIDUALIZED DONOR PROGRAMS BASED ON COMPREHENSIVE HOSPITAL ASSESSMENT, ANALYSIS OF THE DONOR POTENTIAL, THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ONGOING QUALITY PROCESS IMPROVEMENT AND INITIATION AND FOSTERING OF EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE HEALTHCARE COMMUNITY.CURRENTLY THIS DEPARTMENT HAS 16 FULL-TIME COORDINATORS/ASSOCIATES, A SUPERVISOR, A MANAGER AND ONE DIRECTOR WHO, IN ADDITION TO THE VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT AND REFERRAL SERVICES, PROVIDE EDUCATION AND SERVICES TO OVER 120 HOSPITALS AS WELL AS HOSPICES AND OTHER DONATION REFERRAL ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT ARIZONA. DONOR NETWORK OF ARIZONA (DNA) CONTINUES TO UTILIZE THE BEST PRACTICES AS DEFINED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES' BREAKTHROUGH COLLABORATIVES FOR ORGAN DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATION. THIS INCLUDES ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN REGIONAL AND NATIONAL IMPROVEMENT EFFORTS. THESE EFFORTS CONTINUE TO HELP US MAXIMIZE CONVERSION RATES, DONORS AND THE NUMBER OF ORGANS TRANSPLANTED PER DONOR IN ARIZONA. IN ADDITION TO ONGOING EDUCATION IN ARIZONA HOSPITALS AND HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS, DNA HOLDS AN ALL-HOSPITAL SYMPOSIUM EVERY OTHER YEAR.SOME KEY HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2020 INCLUDE:THE HOSPITAL DONOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT PLAYED A VITAL ROLE IN THE CONTINUATION OF ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION PROCESSES IN ARIZONA HOSPITALS THROUGHOUT THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. STAFF WORKED CLOSELY WITH KEY HOSPITAL LEADERS THROUGHOUT THE STATE TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT SURGE PLANNING TO IDENTIFY ONGOING REFERRAL PROCESSES, ENSURE CAPACITY TO ALLOW FOR DONORS IN INTENSIVE CARE UNITS OR OTHER HOSPITAL LOCATIONS IF NECESSARY, NAVIGATE CHANGING VISITATION AND STAFFING REQUIREMENTS AND ACCESS TO NECESSARY MEDICAL EQUIPMENT. STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUT DONATION, EDUCATED THEIR PEERS AND ENCOURAGED OTHERS TO REGISTER AS DONORS. MORE THAN 160 NEW ONLINE REGISTRATIONS AND 1,225 WEBSITE VISITS CAME FROM HIGH SCHOOLS PARTICIPATING ACROSS THE STATE IN 2020.DNA HELPED LAUNCH THE FIRST STUDENT ORGAN DONATION ADVOCATE (SODA) CHAPTER IN ARIZONA IN 2020. SODA IS A NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGIATE STUDENT ORGANIZATION. SODA AT ASU IS AN OFFICIAL ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY ORGANIZATION AND FOCUSES ON DONATION EDUCATION AND REGISTRATIONS ON CAMPUS.IN 2020, HEALTH CARE FOR HOPE WAS CANCELED DUE TO COVID-19. PRIOR TO CANCELATION, 53 HOSPITAL, HEALTH CARE AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS HAD SIGNED ON TO PARTICIPATE. DNA THEN PIVOTED AND LAUNCHED THE SPREAD GENEROSITY, NOT GERMS CAMPAIGN TO CONTINUE TO ENCOURAGE ARIZONANS TO REGISTER WITHOUT TRIVIALIZING THE COVID-19 CRISIS. AS PART OF THIS CAMPAIGN, WE ENGAGED VOLUNTEERS, ADOT MVD AND ATP OFFICES, SOCIAL MEDIA FOLLOWERS, HOSPITAL AND HEALTH CARE PARTNERS AND DNA STAFF.IN 2020, DNA HELD A VOLUNTEER CHALLENGE WITH THE SAME CAMPAIGN SLOGAN: SPREAD GENEROSITY NOT GERMS. THE VOLUNTEER CHALLENGE HAD A FOCUS ON GRASSROOTS AND SOCIAL MEDIA EFFORTS.DNA CONTINUED TO USE MULTIPLE PORTALS TO ALLOW ARIZONANS TO REGISTER; INCLUDING WEBSITE, MVD, SERVICE ARIZONA, SWIPE TO DONATE LIFE, FORMS AND MAIL. PROVIDED CUSTOMER SERVICE BY PHONE, EMAIL AND MAIL TO ARIZONANS WITH QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS ABOUT DONATION.ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION MOTOR VEHICLE DIVISION PARTNERSHIPDNA ISSUED DONATE LIFE ARIZONA T-SHIRTS TO ALL THE ADOT MVD EMPLOYEES THAT STAFF COULD WEAR AT LEAST TWICE PER MONTH. MVD STAFF WERE ALSO PERMITTED TO WEAR DONATE LIFE BRANDED POLOS AS OFTEN THEY LIKE.DNA DISPLAYED BILINGUAL "STORIES OF HOPE AND FACTS ABOUT DONATION WITHIN THE FRAMES SITUATED ATOP TENSA BARRIERS. REVIEWING THE DONOR DESIGNATION RATE (DDR) OF MVDS AND ATPS SHOWS THAT ATPS CONSISTENTLY RANK IN THE TOP TEN LOCATIONS FOR HIGHEST DDR. IN THE FINAL QUARTER OF 2020, DNA ASSEMBLED A VIDEO FEATURING CLIPS FROM HALF A DOZEN GRATEFUL VOLUNTEERS EXPRESSING WHAT DONATION MEANS TO THEM. WE SENT THIS VIDEO TO MVDS AND ATPS TO SHOW OUR GRATITUDE DURING MVD SAVES LIVES MONTH IN AUGUST.PROGRAMS VOLUNTEERS CONTRIBUTED OVER 450 HOURS OF THEIR TIME IN 2020.
