Targeted Neurobiological Research

By focusing research on microglia and central nervous system pain pathways, we accelerate the discovery of biomarkers and effective treatments for fibromyalgia, because dysfunction in these biological systems underlies the disease’s chronic pain symptoms. This strategy emphasizes disease-specific, mechanism-driven research to uncover the biological roots of fibromyalgia, particularly neuroinflammation and immune-CNS interactions. Unlike broad symptom management or generalized pain research, it prioritizes understanding microglial activation and genetic influences on neurotransmitter systems to develop precise, biologically informed therapies.

A sample of programmatic activities from the orgs above. These are what the strategy looks like on the ground.

  • Fibromyalgia Tissue Donation Program American Fibromyalgia Syndrome
    research
The organization initiated and expanded a tissue donation program for fibromyalgia research, enrolling over 170 fibromyalgia patients and matched controls by 2011 to facilitate further studies.
  • Funding Fibromyalgia Research Studies American Fibromyalgia Syndrome
    research
The organization funds research studies focused on various aspects of fibromyalgia, including genetic predispositions, immune system involvement, neuroinflammation, potential biomarkers, and treatment efficacy. This includes funding specific projects and trials, and allocating up to $270,000 in total funding for research grants.
  • Providing Fibromyalgia Information and Self-Management Strategies American Fibromyalgia Syndrome
    direct service
The organization compiles and disseminates information from experts and researchers to help individuals understand fibromyalgia science and advances, and provides practical guidance on self-management techniques such as trigger point massage, hot water therapies, topical pain relief, TENS devices, and activity scheduling.
  • Publishing Research Findings American Fibromyalgia Syndrome
    research
The organization publishes findings from its funded research projects in scientific journals and reports, contributing to the broader understanding of fibromyalgia. This includes reports on immune system responses and endotoxemia studies.
